Travel Solomons and Tourism Solomons, have today announced the annual ‘Solomon Airlines Peace Marathon ‘to take place this year on Saturday 29th October 2022.

The marathon will feature athletes from Honiara and selected provinces who will compete in the 21.1km and the 10km category long-distance races.

The marathon also includes ‘fun race categories of 5km and 2 km.

The marathon will begin at SMI Ground for all categories and head westward of Honiara. The 21.1 km race turnaround will be at Bonegi. The 10 km race will have its turn around at Kakambona and return to SMI ground.

For the fun category, the 5km race will have its turnaround at 7Up bus stop, Tandai. The 2km race will have its turn around at Seafront Bus stop. The finishing line for all categories will be at SMI back at the race start point.

The ‘Solomon Airlines Peace Marathon’ established in 2009, continues to attract some of the country’s top runners including athletes who also compete internationally. Some of the high-profile runners include Chris Votu, Rosifelo Siosi, Sharon Firisua, Diana Matakali and Martin Faeni.

As Solomon Islands prepares for the South Pacific Games in 2023 in Honiara, the marathon provides an ideal opportunity for leading athletes to meet, compete and build confidence as part of their conditioning and preparation for the games.

Bigger plans are also envisaged for the Solomon Airlines Peace Marathon. In 2023, the organisers are hoping to promote the event internationally, as early as January to attract international entrants to compete in three categories – a 42km (full marathon), 21.1km (half marathon) and a10km race.

Platinum sponsor and founder Solomon Airlines is expected to again secure naming rights to the event.

The Solomon Airlines Peace Marathon is expected to grow as an important regional sports event in the South Pacific region.

The corporate sponsors for the 2022 ‘Solomon Airlines Peace Marathon’ include; Solomon Ports, Solomon Telekom, Solomon Power, South Pacific Oil, Solomon Island National University (SINU), The Heritage Park Hotel, Solomon Island Breweries and Soltuna. Further corporate sponsors will confirm their participation in the coming days.
