DASH 8 MAINTENANCE – PNG

E-mail Print PDF

The Dash 8 currently in operation from Airlines PNG with Solomon Airlines will be leaving for PNG to undergo a normal scheduled maintenance check from Thursday 23rd to Monday 27th of August, 2012. This will have the aircraft away for almost 5 days. Such maintenance checks are mandatory requirements and are part and parcel of operating a safe and reliable airline, we apologize for any inconveniences this may cause, however it is a safety requirement and this is something we will not compromise.

Normally, there will be disruptions for those days but interim schedules have been adjusted with our Twin Otter and Islander fleet to cater for no Dash 8 during its period of absence.

The Dash 8 will be ferried from Honiara to Port Moresby on Thursday 23rd, after its first Western run and will be returning on Monday morning to pick up our schedule for that day.

Solomon Airlines apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause and we appreciate the continued patience of all our good travellers.

Those wishing to change their itinerary or reconfirm bookings may do so by calling the Solomon Airlines Reservations office on 177 (Toll Free) or 20031.

SOLOMON AIRLINES RECOMMENCES AUKI AND JAJAO SERVICES

E-mail Print PDF

16th August 2012

Solomon Airlines today gave notice that with effect 3rd September, the airline will RECOMMENCE scheduled services to AUKI (AKS) and JAJAO (JJA).

The recommencement of services to Auki has come about after successful negotiations between the government and the land owning parties of Gwaunaru’u airport. Solomon Airlines was advised last week by the Civil Aviation Department through a NOTAM, declaring that Auki airport is open for normal airline operations.

Auki is the business centre of Malaita Province and the closure of the airstrip has caused much inconvenience to business and the travelling public. Solomon Airlines is pleased to be recommencing operations to Auki again, starting with three (3) scheduled flights per week, services being operated on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays on an Islander aircraft. Solomon airlines advise that daily loadings will be monitored to ascertain traffic demand and if the need arises we certainly have the ability to increase capacity by upgrading to a larger aircraft size. Going forward, we will continue to monitor Traffic demand and supply capacity to suit demand accordingly.

The public are also reminded that there is no airline office in Auki and the new agents are Auki Lodge with the airline’s affairs being managed by ex airline employee Peter Aetee. For reservations and tickets, the public are asked to contact the airlines direct Toll Free line 177 or our agents in Auki, the Auki Lodge.

Solomon Airlines is also pleased to announce the resumption of services to Jajao (JJA) in Isabel Province. The airline stopped services to Jajao some years ago due to very low traffic demand. However, with much increased economic activities now happening on the ground, the airline has had to respond to the increase in demand for air services by recommencing services to Jajao. As with Auki, the airline will monitor daily demands and respond with the most cost efficient service, either by increasing capacity or by combining flights with either Fera or Suavanao. Scheduled services will start with twice weekly dedicated flights on the Islander aircraft also from 3rd September.

Solomon Airlines looks forward to serving the people of these two airports/Provinces into the future.

SOLOMON AIRLINES SUSPENDS PNG SERVICES

E-mail Print PDF

Solomon Airlines confirmed today that it will suspend services to Port Moresby in PNG with effect from its last flight on 3rd July next month.

The airline made it clear that it was only a suspension and will advise in due course regarding it’s re-entry into the PNG market at a later date.

The spokesperson clarified that a number of initiatives had to be taken to ensure its future plans remain intact.

Firstly, the airline said, “our long term plans were to always link PNG to Fiji via Honiara and Vila but due to the priorities we set ourselves with the Australian/Brisbane prime day services, it was always going to be difficult to make a through service work unless it was closer to weekends. This could not be done with our prime services on Friday afternoon and Sunday/Monday”

In the meantime, the airline said, the PNG route has not been as effective as was initially desired and prudent management means when times are tough, we had to make the ‘suspension’ decision and review our plans.

The airline continued that revised ‘plans were ready to link PNG to Fiji to be effective in August this year but when discussing plans with the Maintenance provider of our Airbus H4-BUS, John Holland Engineering of Australia, they indicated they would not be able to support the aircraft should we go ahead with the plans of additional utilisation of H4-BUS from August as they were fully stretched with limited resources.’

This really meant ‘we had to review our total plans and together with the continued HIGH COST of the Airlines PNG Dash8 lease, the airline took the decision which included the suspension of our PNG route and also may include the returning of Airlines PNG’s Dash8 aircraft in due course.’

Solomon Airlines indicated they were ‘working closely with Air Niugini to gauge availability to purchase one of their Dash8 aircraft and also had discussions when Air Niugini would be ready to bring online their newly acquired Boeing B737-700/800 aircraft on the route to Honiara and Nadi.’

This would be timely for each to have their larger aircraft serving the route together as partners. This was expected later in the year.’

Solomon Airlines are hoping to re-enter the PNG market later in the year

AIRLINES PNG DASH 8 CONTINUES LIMITED OPERATIONS

E-mail Print PDF

Sadly, a Solomon Airlines spokesperson indicated, the Airlines PNG Dash8 on lease to Solomon Airlines in Solomon Islands has had continuous minor technical issues which have affected the total scheduled operation of Solomon Airlines throughout the Solomon Islands.

Solomon Airlines has had to continuously review its daily Dash8 tasks and rescheduled flights, which at times have affected the Western runs but mainly; affecting the good people in Lata and Makira Provinces which meant “limited schedules” and at times, NO SCHEDULES for the people in Lata.

In the main, there have been two issues identified with the Dash8 that has created a somewhat LESS THAN SATISFACTORY service standard for Solomon Airlines from Airlines PNG.

The HF radio is integral to all operations for aircrafts in this region. The HF issue has been an ongoing intermittent problem which has meant that only routes that are close proximity to Henderson are able to operate and or close proximity to another communication Flight Service centre of which there is one in Munda. Therefore, the aircraft is able to maintain communication with flight service through these closer proximity locations of the frequency used for transmitting and receiving ‘Flight service’ information.

Whilst it may appear that Kirakira is also in close proximity to Henderson, with the cruise levels of this route, the radio communication is rendered as inoperable and therefore the Dash8 is unable to operate on that route.

Furthermore, the other problem on the Dash8 is related to the GPS or Global Positioning System which is its navigation system not currently reading satellites and therefore on the longer route to Lata, will be unable to identify Lata and its coordinates. Should there be any doubt about the serviceable operation of the GPS; the pilots are unable to depart Henderson which has been the case.

“In the past couple of weeks, we have been awaiting information from APNG on a permanent fix of this issue to have full operational use of the Dash8 again. This has not been forthcoming although APNG have had up to three engineers on the ground at Henderson reviewing all the Dash8 Avionics system to find a solution without success.”

The airline apologized; especially to the people of Lata; for the on-again; off-again plans affecting the Dash8 operation to Santa Cruz and have now scheduled a few additional Twin Otter flights over the next few days to assist in the backlog and hope that Airlines PNG finds a fix/solution to the issues soon. People of Makira, being closer to Henderson, are receiving some Islander and Twin Otter support and maintaining some reasonable service there.

DASH 8 GROUNDED

E-mail Print PDF

Solomon Airlines announced today that its Dash 8 service to all major ports has been cancelled due to a technical fault with the aircraft. An Airlines spokesperson indicated “ Regretfully we have had to cancel our scheduled dash 8 flights today as a result of the fault finding to do with a fault in the nose gear doors NOT CLOSING as activated.

We have decided to ferry the aircraft to Port Moresby to have the part installed rather than wait for a part to arrive which could prolong the wait.

”Initially, Solomon Airlines anticipated that the delay could affect flights tomorrow and others through the weekend, however with the part being available in Port Moresby and having made the decision to ferry the Dash8 to Port Moresby, Solomon Airlines is confident that the problem could be rectified as early as tomorrow morning.

The Spokesperson continued “with any grounding or delay and more so now during the festive season, naturally there will be a backlog of passengers to and from Honiara, so with this in mind, we are working to ensure the aircraft is up and running as soon possible to ensure services return to normal as we head toward Christmas and New Years”.

The spokesperson concluded “We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause, however safety is our priority and we will not compromise this” the airline appeals to the travelling public to be patient as they work through this with an anticipated 24hours delay.
